Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Fort Fisher, North Carolina Historical Figures: Brownsville Sta Ark Jan 23rd 65 Dear Jane I received yours of previous date and hasten a reply This leaves us all well was glad to hear of your good health Oh to day is the first day that has seemed like winter to us here last night it commenced snowing and the snow fell about two inches in depth and to day it has been cold as fun but the sun has shone most all day Last night we had enc ouraging news from the East heard that Fort Fish er is ours with all its guns and two thousand prisoners I tell you I love to hear of such news But I know our loss must have been large But shurely they have lost some as well as we as soon Jane as we get pay I can send home some money to you and I think that will be soon for there was three pay masters came up the other day to pay off this Department but it may be some time ere we get pay yet Spencer wrote to me the other day and he has sent me 1 doz gold pens and silver holders they cost was sixteen doll and fifty cents and I think I can sell them for $50.00 doll so you see I am in the speculation Biss now some and I think I have a nice thing besides to fall back on probly will make a nice thing on bounties yet I have half for collecting and there is quite a number that I will try and get, some in our own camp the cars are coming in now and I hope they may fetch some mail for me from Detroit I have writen to Howard & Welch of Detroit to assist me in collecting the Bounties and am wating an answer now then I will let you know how I make it Jane I am writing this the [ ? ] that I ever wrote a letter in my life but you must Excuse me this time and I will try and do better next time I have now commenced again I went to the office but to night Elder Harmond says he sends his best respects to you and all of the rest One of our company was mar ried to night to a racken sack girl. Jane I may keep some $50 doll to secu late on after pay day think I can make it pay me better here than there if you get your money you had better pay up Noble dont you think so for then you will have a home let what will come Jane I cant think of any more now say to Mother and Father I am going to write them a long letter Oh I liked to forget to tell you that I got a letter from Aunt Kit and a good one too say to all enquiring friends that I am in rack ensack etc. Kiss trudy for me M H Hogmire
