Dear wife it is with pleasure that inow
take the opportunity of riteing afew lines
to you to let you know that iam well
at present hopeing these few lines may
find you the same ireceived your letter
the 3 but have not had an opportunity
of answering it until to day we have been
on duty every day since and have moved
and pitched tents four times last night
thare was about one hundred rebels came
into our lines and our piquets captured
about 60 more you spoke about selling
the steers ithink you had better sell
them if you can get achance and
sell on or two of the cows but you
you must remember that if you sell
them the mortgage must be payed
soon although it may be some time
ithink ishal get home sometime next winter
for our Colonel says he is agoing to get the
regiment home to go into winter quarters
if he can
and if he does we shal all come home
we lay so closet to the rebel lines that
we see thair shells burst in the air
every little while for they are
constantly shelling one another
iwill tell you more of the particulars
when ihave more time and amore
conveinent place to rite but ishal
have to close for the present this from
your affectionate husband
George Phelps
Clark Chapman and mr
miller and both well
but we live well enough here
we draw fresh beef and soft
bread pork and some potatoes
beens and onions and rice and
aplenty of sugar and coffee

to rite so good by for the present
give my love to all my friends
and take adouble share for
