John A. Clarke, of Chelsea, Michigan, enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in the 7th Michigan Cavalry Company E on September 2, 1862 at Stockbridge, Michigan. He was mustered into service on January 23, 1863 at the age of 40. Clarke was in command of the company from February 6 to August 1. He was promoted to Captain on August 1 and was transferred from Company E to Company I on September 1. Clarke was listed as a prisoner of war on March 2, 1864 at Mechanicsville, Virginia. He was confined at Macon, Georgia on July 16 and escaped from Columbia, South Carolina on November 23. Clarke returned to his regiment and resumed command on April 1, 1865. John A. Clarke was discharged from service on December 15, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
