March 16th, 1865 Aunt Sophie I received your last letter some time ago and if I do not answer it soon I shall not have an opportunity for some time as are en route for New Orleans. We shall start down the river tomorrow I expect. I am enjoying my usual good health and all the Michigan friends were well when I last heard from them. May is out to Lawrence on a visit. My wife and the little one will probably go home with her. I don’t expect to write but a short letter this time as my attention must be given to the matter of moving. I [ ? ] still with Co Miz[ ? ] but don’t think I shall remain with him a great while longer as I would rather go to my company. We are having very fine weather although for a day or two past it has rained a good deal but today is very pleasant. I am writing this letter at Head Quarters 1st Brig 2d Div 7u Ala Commanded by Col. [ ? ] of the 12th Mich Vet Infantry. An old school mate of mine is hi [         ?         ]. I have got to wearing two bars on my shoulder and am Capt of the finest Cavalry company in the best Cavalry regiment in the who Army. Pretty nice thing for me ain’t it.
