Near Bealton “Va” April 3rd 1864 Miss Bentley Yours of a Recent Date was Received March 30th as I have a few leasure moments this Eavening I will Improve the Time in answering your short but Welcom letter it makes my heart Rejoyce to hear from Friends that are far away, if I was Deprived of the use of a Pen. I would consider my self for ever unhappy. but when I am sad and lonely I can devote my Time in Writing to some one that is far away. I am surprised to hear that William Schanck has Departed from Essex. I am more surprised to hear that Cyrus is going to Idaho but I honor their Judgement for so doing I hope they will be successful in what ever attempt in the way of doing good to themselves and others. they will learn the ways of the World. that is a grat blessing to one unexperienced. I have had more than I wish to again. I think if ever I come home I will give up my Rambling Disposition. I have been quite unwell since I came back to the Regt but I am well now. You spoke in your letter of your good spelling. I thought you spell very nice. I am learning to spell just like you did. You spoke of having sleighing. the snow fell the 22nd of March in Va Ten Inches Deep, but it only lasted Two or three Days at the Present we are blessed Two inches of mud and still it is Raining. You can Imadgeon the pleasure we have going around on Foot. Alma you can not Imadgeon how lonely I look this eavening. no one to bother me. one of my Tent mates is on Picket the other has retired to his humble couch. and now its Raining Quite hard. a discription now of my Room its Well Furnished a nice Table made of a Va Board Three Stools. A cubbard made of a small box. one Iron Watter Pail and myself comprises the Remander That is a True Discription of a Soldiers Home in the Army I will close for This Time I am with respect D. W.
