G, 4th Camp at Bulls Gap East Tenn April 3 1865 Dear Mother I have received two or three letters from you and I dont now whether I have answered them all or not we have bean in camp here this makes the 3d day and I think we will stay here about a week longer they have got 9 miles of rail road to and then I think we will move I would as soon be on the move as laying around camp the Rebels are very bold here 5 came into camp Saturday and shot a man that was on guard at Head Quarters the guard fired on them and shot one of them we found him in the brush the next morning he was a Lieut the General sayes he will Hang him as soon as he gets well, I wish you could stand in my tent at night and see the camp fires of our Brigade we can see all the camps from one tent and they look splend ed. it is rumord in camp that our government are a going to have trobel with france I hope not or we will have to go to Mexico I dont care about going there, Con Huthman is down here but I have not seen him yet. we got a recruit from white lake his mane is Poter I never saw him before he sayes dick Scerrit has enlisted and is coming down here. you wanted to now if Charles Rice is our 2d Lieut he is not we have not got men enough to muster one but I think he will be as soon as we get men enough he is well. I supose you have not comenced to make garden yet I saw as we came along the road Peas that were up 4 or 5 inches the farmers are all at work plow ing down here. tell Father to send me a hat sice 7 1/8 tell him to get as light a black hat as he can find and send it by mail I want a citicons hat with a wide rim. the hat I bought in Pontiac is about wore out. I think when we come home we will come through washington as we are making for Verginia I was on Picket all day saturday and had a very good time I had my Head Quarters at a house that belonged to a rich old Farmer I had a good dinner and suppose at his expence we had no trouble with the Rebels as they did not come in sight of the Picket line. we have very warm days here and cold nights but we sleep warm as we have got six W. Blankets and 2 Rub Blankets it looks as if we were a going to have some rain. I will have to close for this time hoping this will find you all well give my love to all I send you some stones I picked up on the top of the mountain I dont now what it is but it will cut glass tell Father to pay Charles Rices sister $27 of that mony Dan Pierce sent to him she will call at the store after it.
