Regiment: 5th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Hugh J. Kilpatrick Camp of 5th Mich Cavalry April 22nd 1864 Colonel I have the honor to ask for a leave of absence for fifteen days for the following reasons – I have been with my regiment from its organization nearly twenty months and have never been absent a day – I was in command of my Company on the recent raid to Richmond under Gen’l Kilpatrick, and officers who remained in Camp, were granted leaves in my place and order, and I was thus prevented from visiting my home – Immediately after my return from Richmond I was ordered on picket at Grove Church and was absent fifteen days, and other officers were granted leaves, again depriving me of my right to a leave I have a mother who is suffering from severe illness, and am informed, that she will probably never recover. She is dependent upon me for support, and I am very desirous of seeing her while I may be able to do so. Very respectfully Your Obt. Servt. Geo Drake Capt. 5 Mich. Cavalry Comd’g “H.” Co. To Lieut. Col. C. Kingsbury Ap’t Adj’t Gen’l Cav. Corps
