About the Author
Joseph R. Smith was born on September 8, 1802 in Hudson Falls, New York. He graduated from the United States Military Academy on July 1, 1823. Smith enlisted as a Major in the 7th United States Army Infantry on June 11, 1851 at the age of 48. He was mustered into the Field and Staff that same day. On August 25, 1861, Smith was listed as retiring from service. He was the Chief Mustering Officer of Michigan in 1862 and was the Military Commissary of Musters in 1863. Smith was promoted to Colonel by Brevet and then to Brigadier General by Brevet on April 9, 1865. Joseph R. Smith died on September 3, 1868 in Monroe, Michigan at the age of 68.Documents for this Author:
