Regiment: 2nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Nashville, Tenn. July 30th 1864 Dear Sister Mary I arrived here last Friday morning stoping the remainder at the cities on our way down I was very glad when I arrived here for it was very disagreeable traveling on account of the dust. We remained in Toledo half a day and then started for Cincinati where we remained one day and from there we went to Louisville and remained one day and then started for Nashville where we arrived Friday morning about eight oclock. I spent the day looking around the city and I dont like the looks of the place at all I think it would be a very disagreeable place to live in some of the streets are so narrow that a person can hardly turn around and there are very few nice houses in the city I am working in the Quartermasters department am receiving (45) forty five dollars per month and board but I can not tell you how I like it for I havent been here long enough to find out there is one thing that I wont like and that is the warm weather it is a good deal warmer here than it is in Michigan and I thought it was warm enough there how is the school getting along or rather how are you getting along with the school did the director have any thing to say to you for leaving your school those two days I hope not at any rate. how manys sails have you had since the boys if you have I pity the one that rowed you I dont know how the other boys hands ae but ever since I rowed down from the Island my hands have been so sore that I could hardly work I notice that after Odell came I didnt do much more and if Don Laden have been so accommodating or have liked young ladies company so well he would have done it all. The boys say it was the best visit they ever had and that there was only one fault it was to short a stay. Odell spent the day at our house Don Mont Will and him self came down to the cars and saw us off. Mother felt very bad when I was leaving but she did not say anything for I felt bad to for not having a longer visit with her and with her you I expected before I got home from the war to have at least one month visit you all but instead of that I saw but very little of you or Mother and didnt see Add at all but I guess it will be all right in the spring I just came from church I saw quite a number of young ladies but very few good looking ones of all that I have seen since I have been I have not been able to find the Tennessee girl that I heard so much about while at home I am anxious to see her and see if she is good looking or not. You can tell Nettie that I can not send her that picture yet for the only girl that I knew in this state dont know me now. Tell Millie that I will write to her soon. Enclosed you will find a photograph of Curtis Give my love to From your affectionate brother, Ed A. Winchell P.S. Direct to Nashville Tenn. And write soon. [On Envelope:] Miss Mary T.
