Dear Mother
You must excuse
me for not writing to you
before this if you can for I
can not excuse myself I
have had plenty of time and
the only excuse I can make for
myself is that I am such a
poor writer and composer it
is very hard for me to write
so that any one can read it.
I have been well since you heard
from me last and have been
doing duty at division Head
Quarters for about four months
but geting tired of so much
guard duty I have reported
back to my company again
and expect to remain their
untill my time is out which
is five months from to day.
The regiment has been cut up
very bad since we came into
Tennessee there are only about
one hundred (100) men in the
regiment for duty our Co.
has lost about sixteen (16) men.
We had a pretty hard time
of it during the siege some
days we would’nt get any
rations some we would get
an eight part of a loaf of
bran bread and others we
would get a couple of spoons
full of flour or meal but
for all that there was no
grumbling. we knew it was
all there was so we said nothing.
Since the siege was raised
we have been after the
rebels all of the time
We now lay about (18) miles
from Knoxville and the
rebels are about five miles
from us, but dont seem
inclined to attach us and
I dont believe there will be
another battle here this
winter.
Give my love to all of the
folks Ed A Winchell
