Regiment: 1st Michigan Light Artillery Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Memphis Tennissee August the 25th 63 Dear Aunt it is with pleasure that I sit down to wright a few lines to let you know I am getting alon. I am well at present.  but have been quite sick. Since we came here to this city we have not done mutch marching. Since I came back. We came from Corinth here by the cars. We came here the 13th of May and have most in one spot for a soldier. The rumours is here now that we are to go to Salt Lake City. I hope it is so. But we hear so mutch we cant believe all This is a nice place here is as large a place as Detroit is. Well Aunt Hariet I havnt had me any pay yet what do you think of that. For my part I think it is a shame. My captian is there in Detroit now on a furlough. His time is nearly up. Severl of the boys has been home and are at home now. Quite a number of them that his regiment was badly cut up. I heard bad news a few days since I heard my brother was dead. He died July the 4th. He was not a well man when he enlisted. He died in the hospital. I am thankful that my health has been spared thus far. I hope it may be longer. I will try and take care of myself and see if that wont have come effect. Aunt Hariet I can see relle soldiers graves all around this citty. Some of them are so near the top of the ground I can smell them. They sent the air for some ways. Some of them are in site. Probly 40 or 50 in one hole. An awful site to think of and worse to tell. Well I am an guard to day. I have don my washing and mending for this week all that I am bothered about is Stamps and have had no pay you must excuse me for not writing sooner have you seen [   ?   ] lately? When you see her tell her I would like to have her answer that letter I sent he in July. Tell me if she is married ar going to soon. Tell me all. I must close by saying give my love to all inquiring friends. Kiss your children for me and think of mine. I am far away perhaps to never meet again Direct you letters to Levi J.
