Regiment: 2nd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: in the field by back of New Madrid March the 9th/64 Kind friend I received your letter of the 16th last Wednesday, the day I got here which I was glad to get but I have not had time to answer it untill now. This will a good time a coming there is no direct comunication untill we take the town untill our gun boats gets down here which we espect every day. We could take the place but we could not hold it on acount of their gunboats which are in the river. We have had two skirmish with them since I came here. We took a battery of five or six guns but the fire of the enemy was so hot that could not hold it. You need make no excuses for on the whole you have been more punctual than I have been. You must excuse my crumpled paper and scribling for I am not only a poor writer but I nothing to write with nor to write on. I had no paper so I got this of Lige. We can get nothing here to by no to eat but what we get in the country. We took some corn to an old mill and got it ground and now you will laugh when I tell you that we live on cold mush with out any thing but bacon to it. The figure a which I marked our quarters was just where you see that company of cavalry to the right of the Generals quarters. I have no more of them or I would send you another. No more now.
