Dear Mett I take up my pen
to redeem my promise to you
If you never get this I suppose
the crime will be none the less
but it will be some consulation
to have a clear concience I was out
in the country today and had my
dinner at a farmhouse and I must
tell you what I had to eat there
was new potatoes and green peas
and pigeon pie we are camped on the
railroad between Columbia and
Nashville about thirtyfive miles from
Nashville we will probably lay here
some time until they can get horses
for us I seen a fellow that left
my company after the battle of
[ ? ] he say that John was well
when he left the company he was
wounded in the hand slightly he
says John done his hand up for
him when he got shot there was
one man killed in my company
and two wounded I have not herd
from him since what of the rejime
was home are scattered along on the
railroad in the block houses guarding
the bridges there is no enemy here
excep a few bush whackers for my
part I would like to be mounted
and go to the front right off
there is nothing more for me to write
to you my health is good
when you write to me let me know
how I get along give my love
