Dear Little Frankie,
As I haven’t much to do this afternoon I thought I would commence a
letter to you and finish it tomorrow. I am well have a good appetite. The
country around us now is the best I have seen since I left Mich. It’s pretty level
and seems to be very productive. There is lots of fires and cakes, roast chicken,
and apples but I am all out of funds and must wait until you send me some. I
sent a letter to you Thursday morning in which I sent for five dollars. I have got
10 dollars owing to me but I shant get it until the next pay day and there is no
knowing when that will come. I can live well enough on rations I suppose but
such things taste good and when all the rest are buying them I want them too.
When we get paid off I will send some more home. Send it as quick as you can
dear. I am on picket yesterday and last night. Yesterday we had lots of sport
halting folks. We were on three corners and there was a good deal of travel. We
had orders to halt anybody that we thought was any ways suspicious and
question them as to business until we were satisfied they were all right. We
halted one man and woman and it made the woman as mad as a She went off a
shouting, but frank the night is the worst. My turn came at half past ten to half
past 12 and then again at half past 4 to half past six. There was three men and a
corporal on a post and I stood on two hours at a time. The others went to sleep.
I tell you when I was on in the middle of the night I thought of home, but I must
close for the night.

Well Frankie I will now finish my letter. I have not received any mail
except for a newspaper since a week ago last Sunday. Since that time I have
written six letter home but our Chaplain has gone to Washington and we expect
him back today and then we shall get some mail. I expect we have just had
something the Minister that preached today is a private in one of the companies.
He preached from Second Timothy third chapter and 16 and 17 verses. He
preached a very good sermon. You must write as you can for I presume I do not
get all the letters that you write. The weather is quite warm in the middle of the
day, but the nights are pretty cold. I guess I will wait until toward Frankie and
see if the mail does come. Well dear Frankie. The mail has come and I did not
get any letter. I got a paper dated the 11th and mailed the 13th in which you
wrote that you would send a letter as the same time but the letter did not come.
Which makes me feel very bad but never mind I may get it sometime. I am
thankful for the paper. Oll got a letter but he is back at the camp that we left last
my love to father and mother and your own folks. Answer soon, from you own
Charlie, to his little wife. Good bye til I write again.
