Dear Frankie,
We haven’t got ant mail yet it will be two weeks tomorrow since we got
any but we expect some every day. It is a fine day today but we have had some
very cold strong weather for a few days but the citizens say that we generally get
settled weather about the 10th or 12th of this month. I am well all excepting a
cold. Frankie this town has been a great place for education the St Joseph’s
College is here and there is two large female schools besides two or three
prepatory schools but they are all broke up now and the buildings which are
splendid ones are used for hospitals. The people are most all Secech which were
calculating to have to have a great time for they had been fixing about a week for
they were expecting the Rebs here nut they were disappointed for we got here
first. I have not seen or heard anything of Oll or Horace yet. I don’t know
whether they will come here or not.
Thursday Morning, April 2nd 1863
Dear Wife and Mother, last night I received your letter of the 27th which
contained sad news of fathers death and it was the first I had heard of it for I
have not got the letter you say Leattie wrote to me. Dear Frankie, I am afraid it
will be impossible for me to get a furlough but I shall try my very best but we are
marching so much that I am afraid I shant be able to get one night away anyway
but I will try and Captain says he will help me all he can. We are packing up to
march now and will be off in a short time. I don’t know whether I shall be able
to mail this or not but will try. I will write again soon as I can and will do all I
can to get home. You must try and give someone a while and when I write again
I will try and tell you that. I think I had better so but I must close.
From your affect Husband and Son,
Charlie
