Grant Nelsons Ferry Tenn June 12th 1864 Mett how ar you by this time I am well as usual and enjoying my self first rate I received your kind letter day before yesterday and was very glad to hear from you I had just sent one up the day before I received yours but howsomever I thought I would answer yours we are rafting up here yet we have moved our camp up the river a bout one mile and a half since I wrote last we have got rather a better camp since we moved up here it is dryer we are haveing a great deel of rain here now it has rained most every day or night for ten days it makes it pretty muddy traveling a round and moveing camp so often you must try and excuse me if I don’t write much of a letter we are up here in the woods and don’t get much news we don’t have any reading only what we borrow from some of the sitasens a round here I was over to a little vilase a bout a mile from here one the other side of the river Harison is the name I got my dinner over thare it seemed rather strange to sit down to a table with earthon dishes and white table cloth I felt all most lost I borrowed some books over thare I got some pretty good stories that helps pass a way the time when I dont have to work Harison has been a very pretty little plase before the war it is the county seat of this county Hamilton thare is quite a large jail and a first rate court house thare was a quite a large academy thare but it is all gone to rack now the windows are broken the fences torn down the village is a bout half torn down any [  ?  ] tey appear to be pretty good Union folks the most of them they appear very very friendly to the soldiers I haven’t herd any war news very lately that I could depend on our force is close to Dalton the last I herd I guess Grant will take Richmond by the fourth of July I must hury up and finish my letter for I guess it is a going to rain pretty soon by the looks it rains most all the time now days you wanted me to excuse you for not sending any thing in that box I can readly do that if you will send lots of good long letters I will call it al right I cant think of any more to write this time thare aint any thing up here to write a bout write soon and remember you friend P.S. please send [       ?       ] cottons             George a dress [On Envelope:] Miss Mariette Hutchins Lamont Ottawa Co Mich
