Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Fort Negley Nashville Tenn July 5, 1865 Dear Sister I havent had any letter from you in so long I thought I would write and let you kno how and ware I am i am at Nashville as you will see by this I believe the last time I wrote to you was to Washington we went to Louisville and staid a spell and got our pay and thought from thare we would go home but in stead of that they sent us farther south we arrived here the last day of June and went to camp then the orders came to go into Baracks at the different Forts and the boys did not like to have the regiment broke up and they had quite a mutiny but it did not amount to much thare was a few [  ?  ] out and they sent them down to the Tr[  ?  ] Marshal company A and our company are here at Fort Negly in the Baracks now, it is a pretty good place and quite close to town how long we will stay here is more than I can tell but I hope is will be until we go home yester day was the fourth but it was the dullest fourth I ever saw thare was nuthing going on in town all day thare was a [  ?  ] out in the woods but I did not go out I went down to  see them dance in the evening they southern styl of dancing is a great deel different from ours. the sitasens here wont hardly speak to a fellow here they are such big Rebs I wished that I was up in Gods country and see if they would speak to solder thare I don’t see much prospects of getting home very soon now thare is a good deel of talk that we are going to work here I hope not for I think the work plad out when the war plaid ut it is awful warm weather here now I am glad we don’t have to march now for we never could stand it I was realy in hopes when we were at Washington that I would be home the fourth but I had to give it up thare was quite a number of our Regament deserted at Louis vill and I dont know but they did right for I think we aught to be discharged I cant see the use in keeping so much Army as thare is any way especially engineers all the rest of the engs that we know of is gone home and we have to stay I would like very much to visit your school some of those very warm days but you never have given me an invitation yet and I don’t think I shall come with out one right a way when you do that I will invite you to go to the Theatre. thare is a good theatre here every night but I dont suppose you will go any way Sabin and the rest of the boys are all well Sabe thinks he is most racked because he could not be home the fourth excuse this this poor letter for it is a perfect bedtime here and one cant neather think now write write soon from your true friend and brother George PS direct to Nashville [On Envelope:] Miss Mariette Hutchins Berlin Ottawa Co Mich
