Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Savanah Geo. Jan 21st,1865 Dear Sister I received you letter yesterday dated November 26th and was more than glad to hear from you although the letter was pretty old, yet is was new to me. I am very glad to hear that you are well and going to school. I would like very much to go to school this winter but I dont wee s very good chance now unless it is Military Scool. We are at Savanah yet as you will see by the date but we dont expect to stay long for we have got orders to be ready to march at any time and I think we will go in a day or two, any way part of the army has gone now and I dont suppose we will be far behind. This is a pretty nice town and I would like to stay here a spell longer but I dont think I would like to stay all Summer for I am afraid it will be pretty hot for a Michigander. We dont know where we will go from here but the general opinion is that we will eather got to Augusta or Charleston but we dont know any thing in this country for certain. For instance I went to bed last night expecting to sleep all night but we were all called up at midnight to take up a pontoon Bridge so the boats could pass up the river to augusta. I suppose & hope we wont have as hard a march this time as we did from Atlanta. That was a pretty hard march but the boys all stood it first rate. I was very sory to hear that Frank was dead poor fellow. Iwas in hopes if he got sent to the rear he could get a Furlough and go home. The boys are all well that are here. Ike say he is going home the fourth but I cant see it as soon as that, but I wish it might be. I think it must look pretty odd thare with the fire place tore out. It would not seem like home I am afraid and I dont know what I would do if I should get sick, that would be a nipper indeed. I suppose you had fine Sleighing up thare Christmas and Newyears and a good time generaly. I wonder if it was as cold as it was last Newyears- one year ago. I shant forget that day in a furry. Thare was considerable difereance in the weather now and then. We havent had any cold weather yet to amount to much and not a flake of snow. I am afriad my Sleigh Rides will come out minus this winter. I dont hardly know what to write next. A received a letter from Myron and Nettie yesterday. Nettie said (she) surprised them one night. I suppose she is happy as a clam in high water now. I guess I shall have to stop writing for the want of room and thought. Give my best Respects to Martha and Libie and tell them I wish them a happy Newyear if it aint to late. Write soon and tell me all me all the news, so good by for this time.
