Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Benjamin Butler Savanah Georgia Dec 27th 1864 Dear Sister I now take the first opportunity to let you know how I am a getting a long I am well as usual and enjoying my self as well as the circumstances will permit this is the first chance I have had of writing since I left Atlanta for we have been on the go ever since we left thare the sixteenth of Nov and arrived her the twenty third of dec awful tired and dirty but we have got fixed up now pretty well a gan if we can only stay a spell this is a pretty large place and a very pleasant [  ?  ] considering the swamps a round if we have been on a pretty long march since I last write it is a bout three hundred miles or more from here to Atlanta no small journey to travel on foot with gun equipments bill and bedding a [  ?  ] utensils at least I hope I shant have to make another trip like it during the war for I am very well satifide with what I have got we have all of our (the Berlin Boys) stood the march first rate we are all here safe and sound but Frank Wells he went back to Chattanooga before we left and i haven’t herd from him since probably you have  we have had first rate weather for marching most ever since we started and have fored first rate for liveing we more than went for the sweat potatoes freshment and molasses the country is  pretty well stipped whare the Army went through thare is some as nice country in Geo as I ever saw and some as favor as I ever saw along towards the last of our march it was nuthing but fine swamps we had to lay in front of Savanah seven days before they took the town thare was considerable fighting but I don’t think the loss is very hevy on either side the Rebs shelled our regiment a little the first day we were march ing in advance and we were ordered to halt and were lying by the side of the road near the R.R. and the Jo[  ?  ] threw shell up the RR at [  ?  ] they only killed one man in Co H. and a negro our Regament has been very lucky so far. I suppose you are having a good time this winter going to school sleighriding and [  ?  ] I would like to be up thare this winter first rate but I guess I will wait till the war is over and I think that will be before another winter if things go on a prosper our or they are now I gues I will tell you how I spent Christmas if you will a gree to tell me how you spent yours well in the fore [  ?  ] I fixed up my tent some and had company Willber was over to se me and in the afternoon I went down to see the city and went to church dined on hard tack and coffee don’t you think I spent the day pretty well I don’t know how I shall spend new years but I hope I can get some Oysters bu that time one of the men just came in and says that Gen Butler is in Charleston I am a fraid it is to good to be true. I haven’t any more room but I will write a gan in a few days if I can get any paper write soon for it is a long time since I have herd from you Good by for this time George PS Please direct Savanah Geo.
