Dear Sister
It has been some time now since I have had a letter from you. I am well get and congratulating my self on coming home in a few months. We have marched from Goldsboro here since last I wrote and got Johnson cornered so he has surendered to Gen. Sherman. The report is he has surendered up all the Rebble forces and the papers have gone to Washington to be approved. The papers are all full of peace and the army expects to go home in a short time. Once more the good time has come when war is no more and Peace Reigns through the land. We have been staying here eight days now and when we will leave is uncertain.
We have got a splendid camp now in a fine grove. We moved here yesterday and have just got fixed up. I wish you was here to see our camp and the town. It is a very pretty place for a small one and has got splendid Public and Charitable buildings. The State Capitol and the Governers Mansion (Sherman’s Head Quarters now) are in the centre of the City and the insane Asylum in on the south side. It is a four story brick building about six hundred feet long, very nicely finished. And there is a Deaf and Dumb and Blind Asylum on the west side, It is a splendid building but not so large, and very pretty yards. I dont think the town is so pretty as Columbia was before it was burnt, but that is in ashes now., but I guess marching and burning is played out for a spell and I am one that is mad to rejoice for I am tired of both, but I expect we shall have to march from here to get Transportation North. I saw Asa Marshall the day before we left Goldsboro. He had just got to his Regament. He looks well, but I guess he will have a short try at soldiering. I havent seen him since he came here. I also saw George Oviatt. Frank has grown a good deal since he came in the army. He is well. The rest of the Boys are well except Wells Knapp, he went back to Goldsboro sick, but I guess he will soon be well and go home. We are having nice warm weather now if we dont have to march but if we march it is pretty warm. Write soon from you true friend
George
