Regiment: 13th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp near Corinth Miss May 26 1862 Friend Jennie I received your letter a few days ago and was glad to hear from you it being some time since I have heard from you. I am well now and stand the hardships very well. I am now three miles from Corinth Missippi and have been expecting a battle for sometime but when I do not know our army have been making preparations for some time they have thrown up 15 miles of Breastworks and have got them allmost surounded and they are getting in a tight place. Our Regt was out on Picket guard a few days ago and our Company was attacked By the Rebels some two hundr and about 60 of us. they came out from the woods and yelled out Surender you D—n yankees, but we fell back [ ? ] returning the fire Briskly finely their fun turned and we drove them back killing some and took three of them Prisnors the fire was kept up all day at some distance they never came the second time one of our boys was shot through the arm and one was shot three times once in the head once in the shoulder and in the arm our Capt was shot through the catrige box but did not hurt him any. I tell you we had a warm time for a while but we stuck to it like good fellows if we had not our company would all been taken Prisnors they was within ten Rods of us Part of the time but we took the advantage some as there was a number of large trees to shelter us from the balls that flew thick and fast for three or four hours when the great Battle will commence I cannot tell but before a great while I think we will be [ ? ] in cleaning them out. I got a letter from home about two weeks ago Edward had been sick but the rest where all well I was surprised to hear that Mr Raymond was Married I must come to a close with this. give my respects to all write soon and often and you will oblige very much a Soldier friend, on the Borders of Misisipi and if I live to get through this you will hear from me again I remain truly an old friend and school mate F D Root To Miss Mary J Dunton
