Friend Harold
I received your letter in due season. You said that
Jim Taylor has enlisted in a battery. I am sorry that he
didn’t get in our company. Captain Willits says that he
would hike to have him in our company. Our regiment
went out on another raid but did not confiscate
anything. We went after old Stuart but he kept out of
our way and I think it as the best thing that he could do
for we had to strong a force for him. We had the first
Virginia, the fifth New York, the first and second
Vermont, the fifth and sixth Michigan and all of it
Cavalry. We went through one sesh town where there
was lots of sesh and there was a hospital there too.
They had out a white flag and we did not search any of
the houses nor bother any of the citizens. We got one
Captain and one Lieutenant there, and we are all well
and hope these few lines will find you enjoying the
same blessing. Will has been saying that. I left this
laying on the bench while I went out and he role them
few lines. I was going to tell you how the Captain looked when
Will was following him up. They made him go on foot
and the mud was up to his ass. We was all over the Bull
Run Battle ground. I saw soldiers buried some with
their feet sticking out and some with their arms out.
There is lots of dead horses there. The ground is all
covered with cannon bales and shells. The trees we all
shot to pieces. I saw the ground that Michigan third
was on in the fight and where they retreated. I could
imagine how Champ looked throwing himself. We
heard that the Rebels was going to meet us there and
we formed a line of battle and watched over an hour
then went on to Fredericksburg and stayed two nights
and on day. I must close fir it is water time.
Answer soon. From your friend, G.A.P.
