Regiment: 2nd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Madison Sept. 17th /62 (Indiana) Dear Father It has been some time since I have written home or received any letters from home. I take the opportunity of writing to you while the boat is stoped at this place (Madison) we passed New Albany & fulton last night it was quite a sight to see the locks & to pass through them at fulton we went through about 12 Oclock in the night passed Louisville this morning early. their is some 14 boats in our fleet. there is considerable sport when the boats get to racing it we are on the fastest Steamer and the newest. there is only one company on each Boat. I suppose we shall be at our journeys end by tomorrow noon which is at Cincinnati. they tell us we will have a little better time than we have been having for the past year I hope so at any rate. Chan & Wing are getting along finely they are on the Hospital Boats. as for Ira I can not say we left him at Corinth in the Hospital quite sick. the river is so low that the Boats run on sand bars evry little while. I had to stop just now to hear Van tell one of his stories he is the best Lieutenant on the job our Captain no one likes and Lieut Johnson is another fine man but he is not with our company now, we left Mississippi Just as chess nuts & figs and persimons were getting ripe. we find plenty of watter mellons water melons & paw paw all along the bank when ever the Boats stop. I would to be home & go to York State with you. I shall when I get home if ever I do. Lew & myself are standing this kind of Buisness better than the rest of the Boys I believe I never was in better health in my life fat as butter. when we get to Cincinnati we’ll not be a great distance from home on of our company died the other day M. Boyer was his name he has two other Brothers in our com- and one other man died since we left Corinth his name Stephen Travis fine fellows both of them. the Boys are feeding the horses & I shall have to bring my letter to a close. Darrow & Hayes are well & feeling tip top, give my best wishes to all and write soon. Your Son Charles Potter
