Grand Rapids. Oct 29th
1861
Dear Father & Mother
It has been a
good while since I have writen
to you and so I guess I
will write a few lines to
let you know that we are
all well for there is nothing
new I told you in my last
letter that we was agoing
to leave but we got sliped
on it so now I cant tell
when we shall leave I dont
know but we shall stay
here all winter we are a
going in to our tents to
morrow I have got my
horse picked out to take
care of I dont know whether
we can keep the ones we have
picked out or not Col. Kellogg
arrived here to day from
washington he say we are
not going untill we get armed
& equipped, we had a great
time here last sunday
night the boys all got mad
and tore the dinning table
down &smashed the dishes
all to the
[ ? ], well I dont
know as I can write much
more this time I told you
once there was nothing new
I do not know whether pa has
got home or not I wrote too
letters to him and told him
when we should come through
Detroit but we did not come
through when I thought we should
I wrote to libbie last week
and told her not to write
untill I wrote to her and
told her where to Direct
her letters Chan is fast to
sleep hank & Dave are making
up their beds and the latter is
sounding, now. we have got a
new cook to that’s is all
