Regiment: 2nd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Winchester. Nov 12th 1863 Dear Father After three days Hard marching I find my self at this place also three or four letters from home & the paper & envelope & stamp you spoke of it is the first letter I have had from home in over two months. was very glad to hear that you was in such good health. before we left the Ferry. I was sick three or four days they all thought I was coming down with the Small Pox. & there would not any one come near me for fear of catching it. I am well now & in fine spirits it will cure any person to climb over one of the mountains we have to climb evry time we march. our Brigade is under marching orders now. expect to leave to morrow our destination is at Sparta this state five or six days march. we shall probably stay there this winter. the talk is that we are agoing to get our pay before we go. I dont know how it is the pay master of our Brigade shot himself the other day accidently that may stop our pay for a short time. well Father as I have got to write several letters this morning & the most of them going home I cant write very long ones. I have got to write to Libbie & to Albert Clarey. Jack Champion was afraid of being drafted the reason he enlisted wasent he He has done well if he has got 2nd Duty Sergeants place that is a good place he dont have to stand any pickett or do much of any duty as long as there is a private accept taking charge of squads of men while on duty such as Sergeant of the guard. I am 4th Duty Sgt my duty is the same as that of Jacks there is five duty Sgt. in a Cavalry Company. you wanted me to give afull account of the Battle I suppose you have had it a dozen times before this so I will say nothing about it. I heard that Bert Spaulding was dead do you know anything about whether he is or not. I do not know as you could get through the lines or not I should think very likely you could. Lieut Darrow is at home now I think he could let you know how it would be about coming through. I would like to have you come if possible. Tell Miss Perinal I have not received that long letter she was agoing to write give my love to all. This will have to do this I must write to Albert Your Affectionate Son Sgt. C. H. Potter
