March 1st 1862
Dear Father & Mother
having a few
moments to spare I thought
I would write a few lines
to let you know how
I am getting along & where
I am stoping at present.
We left Camp Granger or
Fort Holt yesterday and
landed at a place called
Commerce, this morning I thought I would
write a few lines while I
had the chance. We are camped
in the woods for to night
the 3
rd Reg & the 2
nd all
but our company & Co H
have gone on where they
are going I dont know
we follow on tomorrow morn
at sunrise. I dont know
when I can write again
perhapps not in two or
three weeks. for we leave
evry thing we have got accept
an extra shirt & pair socks,
pen & paper when we can
get any more is more than
I can tell. the boys are all
well. we left 13 of our boys
at Commerce sick.
give my love to all I will
write again when we get through
with this march. we are after
Jeff Thomson & we will get
him or die & we may have
to march some one hundred
miles, it is tough work
to sit on a horse & ride
all day I tell you,
well I shall have to come
to a close for the boys
are going down to the
post office/ Dave is agoing
to send a line on this
to his father. I hope these
few lines will find ma,
will & all the rest.
the boys are loading
their guns & revolvers
Ready for fight
Good Bye
