April the 16 1864 Camp near
Stevensburg Va
Dear wife it is with pleasure that
i now take this opportunit of adressing
a few lines to you to let you know that
iam well at present and hope that
these few lines may find you the same
it is a raining here to day and iam on
guard it is rather unplesent ireceived
two letters from you and was glad
to hear that you was well and iwas
glad to hear that your mother had got
home again and to hear that she thought
of me but you must tell her to excuse
me from wrighting to her at present
for thare will not be any more mail
go out from this army at present but
safe the time is verry
[ ? ] at hand
when we have got to leave here and
it will be along march ihave got
a good many Clothes that ishall have
to throw away because icant carry
them and they wont tel me send
them home idont know of any thing
more to wright of at present
so good by my Dear Jane
