My Dear Wife,
I received your affectionate letter with the greatest of
pleasure and now hasten to answer it and let you know that I am
well. Dear Hannah you can do as you like about living with your
aunt or going east you must enjoy yourself the best you can until
I come back. When we will take a pretty cottage and live in peace
and harmony it will not be long before this war will be over when we
shall all return to the dear ones at home.
We signed the payrolls this morning and I think we will get pay for
two months within a few days. I will send you some money if I do
not have a chance to send it by any one I will sent by mail The
report is now that we are going to
Tennessee before long. If we do we shall take the Steam boat and go
down the river.
We had a very hard march to Danville 38 miles and back in
three days, it killed off a number of men that were not strong
enough to stand the march We have taken a great many from the
Regiment to the General Hospital in the City. Our rank are sadly
thined and I may well say that death and sickness had laid a heavy
hand on our Regiment
Give my love to Walter and Abby
I remain My Dear Wife your Affectionate Husband
