Rosecrans Nashville Tennessee July 15th 1863 Mr Trowbridge Dear Sir I take this pleasant opertunity of writing a few lines to you to let you know that I am well and I hope these few will find you all injoying they same Blessing Well Walter I want you to Do mee a favor by getting a Pare of Boots made for mee I want a pare of Calf Boots with Duble Soles 10 M Size and 11 in length and I also want a pare of Woolen Shirts made if you get mee some fine Checard or aney other Dark color that you think best I want your wife to cut them and make by my white fine shirts onley instead of putting a color on them I onley want a band around they neck But Bee shore and have her make them large enuf I will inform some other time they reason I that I want they above articals Tell abby I wil send her a present if she will make them for me and put a nice pocket into them if you send them Please write mee a letter they same time I supose you are busey to work on your farm a haying But if you can do me that favor I shall bee very thankful to you Walter I should like to see you very much I shall never forget they day they 22nd left Pontiac But I am sorey to say that twelve good boys that helped constute Company D are home sleeping in thare graves But Thank God I am still spared and in they land of they living We have favorable news from all quarters lately Generall Rosencrance his Sending in they Rebels as Prisoners of War in droves from they front they train from Murphreesboro Brouth in last night one hunder deserters from they Rebel Armey I have seen them and conversed with them They staited to me that they was Tennessee and Was conscripted into they Rebbel Armey last fall and say that they will not leave thare owen state to go into Missippi and Alabama to go into they coten States to Bee Buchered or Bee starved and marach all most to Death in they Burning Sun they say that General Forests Division are mostley all Captured and diserted and he has fled to they mountains in northern Alabama or Georgea I say success to General Rosencrance and his Western Volunteers as cats them hey Weather is hot so hot as it has been But it has rained hear for nearly every day for they four weeks past But every things has a splendid appearance hear Green Corn and Ripe tomatos are Plenty and in fact everything in they vegtaions are plenty hear But they also now have to sell them as they onley last fifty cents for a half dosen small green cucumbers and all other things sold in like maner So you see that money is not much use to a man hear to a man in this place now Walter if you can send me they articals you will oblige me very much By so doing I saw John Chambelan hee is well and sends his respects to you all George Owen is gaining sloly But is still in they Regimental Hospital they are still a diging trenches and throwing up fortifications all they time for they defince of they city Now I have not much news to inform you give to your wife and mine and all Inquiring friends so no more at present from your Well Wisher and Rememberd friend William Painter When you send they Box have it Marked Sergent William Painter Co D. 22d Michigan Infantry Vol Nashville Tennessee
