Regiment: 22nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Beaufort South Carolina January the 10th 1862 Dear Wife I received you very welcomd letter the 7th and it found me well at the time with the eckseption of my Neck that is most well now it is all most heald up we ar at the same place that whe campt the next day after the Battle But I think that we will March for some Place and I cant tell whare But I think that the march will Bee I think that it will be towards Charleston But if we due whe will hav some harde fittin to due fore th reabals ar armed with enfield rifels betwene this Place and Charlston and I think thare men are well drild to and tahy wont give up untill the last But as neare as we can find out we kild three or fore hundread in the last Battle that is what the Niggars tells us that was on the other side of the river the day we had the Battle with the reabals The Darkeys rund awey from thare evry day and Night thare is about ahundread around our camp and thay Black as the Deaval to So the Government has goot to fead them thay ar all ages Little and Big we hav not sean one wite womin since we come to this iseland and she as a Prisoner that was took in a house on the iseland We hav not eat a meale of Vittles Since we landid to this Porte I wudant now how to act when I come home and geet By the table along with you We hav plenty to eat Such as it is Porke and Beans and Rice Coffee and Harde Bread and tea Potatose is scarse here but sweat potatoes we geet plenty But thay are not the thing to stan by like our kind Our Mager has ben up heare to day to se us he goot Shoot Thrue the thy in the Battle He thinks of coming home soon his name is Whatson Deare Wife I would like to se you and little Abby very much and all the rest of the folks to tell Jacob that Wash ses he is a smarte man not to rite to him Wash want rite to him very soon But he sends his respects to him as a Brother and wishes him good luck The Weather is ware here as it is in August in Michigan with the exception of a frost once and a will the trees are all green as thay are in Michigan in the summer and the dore yards ware thare is any Blooms with roses Wash has had a letter from his wife lately and she is to her Mothers and has goot all settle Wash sent her ten dollars the other day Wash Sends his love to Walter and his Wife and you and all the rest of the folks I want you to send me som stamps fore I cant geet any here whe haint goot our two months pay yet.
