Regiment: 22nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Nashville, Tennessee August 16, 1863 Mr Glasfire Dear Sir Your kind and welcome letter bearing date of the 9th was received this morning and I asure you it was a welcome visetter for I began to think that you had all forgot mee down here in Dixey But I see that I have some friends left yet in Michigan I was glad to hear that you War all well and enjoying as good health as you are I am happy to inform you this leaves mee well att present and in good spirits good health and good health is a blessing to a soldier and thare is nothing that keeps uup a soldiers spirits as to recieve incorigin letters from his friends at home Oh how I wish that I could see you all again for a short time to have a good John it is nearly one year have pased away into eternity and oh the 22nd Regiment has lost some good Boys Our company have lost 13 men and our Captain by the hand of death My company now numbers 80 men in all and [ ? ] Officers and there is only one company in the Regt that has got more men than owers have But one Regiment was never in better health since we left Pontiac than the are at the present time I was glad to hear that Hannah had received the things that I sent her Shee wanted to know how much money I let George Owens have to buy a stone for chares safer Five Dollars was what I paid and you said Sarah Safer had paid Hannah five dollars That was all right you tell hannah that I want her to have little Abbys likeness taken and sent to me and I shall look for it until it comes If she cannot get it taken on Saterday She must go down some other day When the are not so busey and make them take it The weather is very hot hear at present It makes the sweat run off me a stream But I hope by help of God We shall not have to stay heare another sumer I trust this unholy War will bee Brought to a close and every traiter bee made to lay down his arms and renew his aligance to the Old Flag that our Forefathers So Dearly earned and the Stars and Stripes Bee made to float all over this country in triumph and in Defiance to the traitors that has sought to Destory it and this bee One Country and One undivided people one Flag and one nation and I firmly believe concerning the drafting in Michigan But I hope the will draft and show some people The law can be infoursed in defiance of Coperheads and if the make aney Resistance thar can bee a few of the Old Vetterains Regiments sent home to infourse it and I gess the would not like aney Better fun than to make them Submit to the Laws and Constitution of our state let them come and share the lot of Soldier in the Broiling Sun of the South The would not think it was such a nice thing to bee a soldier if the was in the Rebble lines They would have Benn prest into the Servis long ago Williaam hadkinson is well and so is George well and all the boys that you know and sends thare best to you all Give my best wishes to Purdy and Amasigah and to your wife and Except my Best wishes and thanks yourself Give my love to my wife and have send mee littler Abbys likeness right off I must close by Remaining your friend and well wishes from William Painter to John and Susen Glasfire Direct as Before and write soon and send all the news you can so good by (I received a letter from Trawbridge yesterday morning             William Painter 22nd Mich
