Regiment: 1st Michigan Light Artillery Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp Nelson KY Sunday Feby 7th 1864 My Dear Hattie. Having a few minutes to spare I will improve them by writing to you I have got all things ready for marching and go within an hour. My detachment has increased to about 500 men. Have got a part of them arrived and hope to be able to get through. We shall have a hard time of it. I have not been able to get a horse and must go on foot. Of the men that I started with from Michigan nineteen are already in the hospital. No doubt but that half of the whole number that I leave home with will have to be left on the road. I went to Lexington Friday and returned on yesterday. Expected to find a letter from my darling girl but was disappointed. When I shall be able to a letter from you now I know not but fear it will be a long time I shall write you whilst on the way to Knowville if possible. I dont like to go down there for the reason that I cant hear from my own dear girl as often as I would like to and there too I shall not be able to write to her as often as I wold wish to. I am going to have many hardships to endure but if I am blessed with good health hope to be able to en go through safe and sound I think of my dear girl very often and would like to see her so much. May God protect us both and bring us together again safe and in good health is the prayer of him who will now cease to love his noble and darling girl Good bye Byron Excuse brevity as I must go
