Regiment: 6th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp in the Woods near Farefax,, April 7th 1863 Dear Friend Kate it is with pleasure that I am a going to try and write a few lines to you to let you know the way that I am situated and the reasons why I have not answered your letters I have had two from you and one from Olive and Sarah and some from home but this is the first one that I have undertook to answer well I hant told you the reason of all of this I went off on one of our rades and it rained all the time and we had to laye down in the rain and it rained all knight and all the next day and before we started for camp I took of my revolver and belt and took it to Lieut Birges and told him that I couldnt weat it and it was as much as I could do to ride my horse but I got back and went and threw my self down in the tent and staid there til the next day about eleven o clock and they came and took me to the Hospital and I have bin here ever since and havnt bin of the bed and am now on my back so you must excuse this scratching and I will try and do better next time our Reg has bin of once since I have bin sick and one man out of Co C was killed and and one wounded they was out patrolling and there was only two of our men and they saw four rebls and they charged on them and the rebls shot one of our men through the heart and and put three balls in another one in each arm and on through the leg and that wasnt anough and they made him get of his horse and threatned to kill him but didnt and he is here in the next bed to mine they fetched two rebs in here this morning that they had taken prisoners well Kate you will get tired if you read all of this and I guess you will have to employ a philadelphia Lawyer to read it for you but you must not forget to write for I think of it every day and would like to write but you dont know how I hate to write with a pencil and one cant write with ink and be on his back but write often and when I get well I will make up all lost time no more at present From S D Mills To Catharine Hamilton good bye
