Dear Friend
Kate it is with
pleasure that I am a going
to try and write a few lines to you
to let you know the way that I
am situated and the reasons why
I have not answered your letters
I have had two from you and
one from Olive and Sarah and
some from home but this is the
first one that I have undertook
to answer well I hant told you
the reason of all of this I went
off on one of our rades and
it rained all the time and
we had to laye down in the rain
and it rained all knight and
all the next day and before
we started for camp I took of
my revolver and belt and took it
to Lieut Birges and told him
that I couldnt weat it and it
was as much as I could do to
ride my horse but I got back
and went and threw my self
down in the tent and staid there
til the next day about eleven o clock
and they came and took me to
the Hospital and I have bin
here ever since and havnt bin of
the bed and am now on my back
so you must excuse this scratching
and I will try and do better
next time our Reg has bin of
once since I have bin sick
and one man out of Co C
was killed and and one wounded
they was out patrolling and
there was only two of our men
and they saw four rebls and
they charged on them and the
rebls shot one of our men through
the heart and and put three
balls in another one in each
arm and on through the leg and
that wasnt anough and they
made him get of his horse and
threatned to kill him but didnt
and he is here in the next bed
to mine they fetched two rebs
in here this morning that they
had taken prisoners well Kate
you will get tired if you read all
of this and I guess you will have to
employ a philadelphia
Lawyer to read it for you
but you must not forget to
write for I think of it every
day and would like to write
but you dont know how
I hate to write with a
pencil and one cant write
with ink and be on his back
but write often
and when I get well I
will make up all lost time
no more at present
