Regiment: 5th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Washington Feb 14th /64 Dear Wife It is Sunday morning but it does not seam much like it here I am well hope this may find you the same we left the fort last Wednesday the 10th in the morning a Steamer came down took us up to the City and there we took the cars for Toledo from there to Cleveland from Clevel- and to Pittsburg here we left the cars and was marched into the nicest Hall that I ever saw where they had everything that was nice to eat and a plenty of it stopped there four or five hours then to Harrisburg and took supper the next evening nothing to to brag of there from there we went to Baltimore arrived there yesterday in the forenoon stopped there the remainder of the day until eight in the evening then started for Washington arrived here at three Oclock this morning then was marched to the Barracks will stop here until Tuesday morning we had a pleasant journey the weather has been fine and this morning seems like April the ground is dry and nice getting around Julia I can hardly write atall for I have nothing but my knee to write upon and there is so much noise there is two violins a gowing and I cannot tell how many there is a dancing and playing cards and singing songs and every thing that you can think of We was paid of last Monday which was the 8th of Febuay but our seventy five dollars happened to be Seventy three and sixty three of it I have sent home to John Fewlass all of the [  ?  ] boys sent their money to him on in the care of him and wish him to distri[  ?  ] it to their families and take his pay for doing so we thought of sending it to [  ?  ] by express and sent Elisha Wright to the City for that purp- ose but he came acrost our Sheriff Wm Hartman and sent it by him though twould be less expence tell Father Fewlass to pay McPherson fifty dollars and keep the rest yourself except three dollars which you may let Hiram have I must close for there is so much noise that I cannot hear myself think kiss my little boy for me So no more at presant from your husband S.
