Dear Mother I take my pen in
in hand to inform you that I am
well and I hope These few lines
may find you all in good health
I came yesterday I received your
letter and a pair of
[ ? ] mitens came
just in time as I am on guard the
same night they came. have you
had any letter from Aunt lately?
I havent had any from her for
some time and I have not had
any from John Shane for
[ ? ]
I suppose you know that
Jennerall Crooks has given
out orders that no soldier
shall go home untill he is well
drilled. I would like to know
what the infernell fool means
heare we have been out eighteen
months and done nothing else but
drilled why we are better drilled
than any
[ ? ] troops because
they have been here fighting while
we was drilling if he thinks he
can get us to drill or take any
[ ? ]
in drilling by not giving out
furloughs he is badley fooled if
he would only let us go home and
stay for a copple of weeks when we
would be satisfied but if they officers
can stand
[ ? ] then we can.
I have been busy all day dawbing
our cook shead, we are now fixed
for the winter. if they only let
us stay heare this winter and give
us furlough I don’t mind working
but hate this scouting it is just
walking for nothing. every scout I
have been on yet has been after
[ ? ] and we might
as well try to catch the devill or
one of them we have easier times this
winter than we had last winter
we have one
[ ? ] the winter
we come on guard only once a week
now. we have a good guard house now
if they would only keep the porkers
Out somewheres times
[ ? ] it would
be much better
we have newspaper now every
week Joe Osborne has too or three
papers sent to him every week
and Dan Fearron has the Escford
[ ? ] sent to him so I get to read
all of the papers Dennis Webster
told me this morning that he got a letter
stating that his father died with
the
[ ? ] he seems to take it
very hard it is good thing now
that he has been so saving of
his money. he has saved most
all of his wages since he came
out I believe his Mother still lives
in hamilton yet. we have a lively
time now in our bunk. Charles
Osgood has bought another fiddle
and he keeps it going from
morning untill night but no more
