Yours of the 23d Dec. 1863
was recd to day
I am sorry if you have not herd of the
[ ? ] of
your son
[ ? ] this for I caused to be writen to you a letter
about Dec. 29 th your son went through to Knoxville with
a dispatch to Gen Burnside from Cumberland Gap
during the siege of Knoxville while on his return
about Nov 26
th he was capured by the Rebels or from
all accounts that we can here he is now a prisner at
Richmond. Sergt Rowe herd from you and here
of his fathers death before he was captured
I sent in a furlough for aproval for him to go home
but did not receive it until after his capture
it then came back aproved.
I would say further more that your son is a good
soldier and a Brave one and I am in hopes for his
sake and his pareants that his captivity will be but of
short duration
