Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Chattanooga Tenn May 16th 1865 Dear Sister I have just had the pleasure of reading your interesting letter if found me enjoying myself firstrate I never enjoyed myself better in my life than I do now and I hope that my letter will find you the same. I am glad that you like your school so well. The young folks in our neighborhood must be pretty well cleared out. Oh I am glad that I [  ?  ] there. I was down town yesterday to see some rebel prisoners I tell you they were a pretty rough looking set but they seemed to feel pretty well they send that they were glad that they were taken for they were tired of fighting and marching and while I was down town I found some one that I knew I who do you spose it was well I guess that you cant spose who it was so I will tell you who it was it was Pealey Swan he is in charge of a squad of men getting out timeber. He is same old sixpence that he always was. I hope just been out drilling this afternoon for the first time with out guns oh I dont like to do it for it is [  ?  ] wether down here now but not so [  ?  ] as I expected to find it. It is cold enough nights for a fellow wants to good blankets over him every night. George got a letter from ma to day she said that they were going to send us a bore and that they they were giving to the Rappids the next day to express it through you may look for my picture in my next letter for the pay master is here and we have signed the pay rolls they have payed Co B and they are paying Co C and I expect that they will us off tomorrow and I thought wouldent wait to send it in this letter for fear some thing might happen so that I should have to [  ?  ] to long. I havent heard from [        ?        ] folks but I wrote to them a long time ago I guess that they couldn’t have got it. I was over to the twenty first reg the other day and I saw the first Lieut Biglow and 2nd Hamilton and sink Vanderhoof and Charley Dickerson and Albert Monroe and Bud Blakely and they were all well and I tell you Abe looks firstrate with shoulder strap on I think it is a pitty that you hadent a little more paper so that you could have written a little more but never mind I will send you some paper in this letter for them are just the letters I like to get but the boys had a great time laughing about my news paper they thought that I had better get a furlough to read it oh I tell you we have got a jolly set set of boys in our tent and they are good boys to. Supper is ready and I must go to sit now. Supper is over and I am going to finish my letter if they is no preventing [     ?     ] Well mett I think this war is going to end before a year from this time. Oh dear I cant think of any thing to write that will interest you so so I will bid you good by excuse all mistakes and and write as often as you can and by so doing you will oblige your brother Sabe the rest of the boys are all well give my best respects to Miss M To Mariette
