Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: May June 12th 1864 Dear Sister I will now try to answer your letter which I recd [  ?  ] the eighth dated [  ?  ] the 24th there was a bridge burned down out by lookout Mountain and we dident get any mail for sometime your letter found me well as usual and that was pretty well. George was pretty awhile ago but he is getting quite tough again, we are about eighteen miles from Chattanooga rafting lays and timber. George and Myron and Theodore are here too. There is seventeen of our Co here to work and Co C are getting out the timber for us to raft. I suppose that you dont see that picture yet I went down town day before yesterday on purpose to get it taken but it comenced raining just as we got down there and it rained all the afternoon so that I couldent get it taken and I had to start back early yesterday morning with the teams that brought up the rations and we had an awful time for it rained all day. I thought my arm was not through and through but the other was all right fo I dident have any rubber blanket with me. George has gone across the river to day to a little village to buy some butter they wanted me to go with them but I told am that I had an all days job on hand to answer your letter, and they allowed I had. I was over two weeks ago to day and took dinner over there. I suppose that you would like to know what we had for dinner. We had bread and milk and butter and green peas we dont have much news from richmond was atlanta it seems to to be quiet all around. But I think that we will have richmond by the [   ?   ]. I hope so at least. I have got fine dollars that I shant want to use before next pay day and I am going to send it to you to go to the fourth with I guess that you can [        ?        ] or John to go with you being its leapyear. What you dank eh.. oh the old Harry I cant think of any thing to write that ish so I saw all the boys who I was down the town Ike and Frank Wells are getting tough. Wells and Dennis and Frank [     ?     ] have been sick and are getting better but Wells and Dennis look quite bad yet. They all think that I stand it firstrate I havent been on the sick [   ?   ] yet and I hope that I shant have to while I stay in the army I have had a letter from hudson since I first came down here, but I am looking one every day. I have had one letter from Aunt Mina but I have not answered it yet and I dont know if I ever shall. I dont know how long we shall stay in Chattanooga I hope that we [   ?   ] stay a great while for I have got tired of staying in the city but I like it firstrate where we are now but I dont believe that we will stay here a great while. I cant think of any more to to write so I have yet to stop that isk so. We go our [   ?   ] quite a shell ago and it was all night.
