Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Lamont April 24th “64 Dear friend after delaying so long to write to you I will attempt it now. I have waited so to change my address, for I knew if I did not you would not have time to get an answer to m before I would be gone. Martha and me moved here yesterday. We have got a very pleasant house here a short distance from the school house and I think I shall enjoy myself first rate. We are going to attend school here three months if nothing happens. School will commence here tomorrow. The folks are all as well as common. I presume you have heard that Martin Carlisle is dead. He died two weeks ago to morrow night. There was quarterly meeting held at our school house last week. There was qiute a crowd of young folks there considering the times but I did not see you there, I wish I would. I had some letters from the boys last week. They were all well except Ike, he was sick with the Chill fever gut was getting better. They said they were having fine times. Sabin said he has been up on Lookout Mountain. You wished his address-it is Co. D. 1st Mich Eng’s & Mech’s, Chattanooga, Tenn. We are where we can see the river from our back door which I think is very pleasant but it is very rainy here to day, so we did not go to church. We have had a few days of very pleasant weather and I hope this will not last long for we have had so much gloomy weather that I am sick of it. The roads were never know to be worse than they were here for a while but are much better now. I should like to have your wishes realised in regard to taking Richmond, if they would not take you instead. I suppose they would just as leave as not but you must look out Dell and be enough for the Rebs. The 2nd Cav. are expected home soon. I heard the Thame has has got his discharge and is coming home. I hope it will not be long before you will all come home. No more for to day. Tuesday Envening. I have just returned from school and will finish this letter. I have been to school now two days and I like it firstrate. It has been very pleasant to day but not very warm. I have not got much aquainted here yet. I hope to hear from you soon and that you are well. With asking you to soon favor me with a reply I will close by bidding you Good Bye. Please excuse so short a letter and such a poor one. Address Lamont, Ottawa Co. Mich from your friend, Mariette Hutchins
