Rosecrans Nashville, Tennessee Julye the 1 1863 Dear Friends I take my pen to let you know that I am weel and injoying good health, and I hope you are engoying the same blessing. I receved yours of the 19 every thing is quiet as Nashville but thire is sum hard fighting at the front. general Rosencrans is a doing sum good fighting he has taken 6000 prisners besids drowning 500 hunderd thire was 600 prisners came in on the train last night and 60 officers thire will be more in tonight We are staiond heare to do garsion duty in town but I don’t like it for it is hot in town I should rather be on picket it would be culer I have had good health sence I camen heare this is a plsent plase. thire was one brigade left heare night befoure last for the front to reenforse Rosey (Rosecrans) we expect to mosey back on the old Camp groung by the fort so we will be were we will get plenty of peaches and apples. Thire has ben lots of rain the last ten days the river has risen so the boats can come up to this plase. I want you if you have to come in the army to get in this regment for your time will be out wen myen is and it is a good regiment I have promoted to a Corpral so I wont have to stand gard more. I belive I have as friends as ny boy in the Company. I should like have good lerning but I can wright good a nuff to be a Corpral I am getting so that I like to be a solder I want you to send me a copey of Capital letters that I can practice them. I will get my likeness taen if I can. It is a hard thing to git a chance for I am on duty everey day. Tell Presley that I should like to have him to answer my letters I have nothing more to right at present If you intend to enlist, send me word, but I would not advise you no more at present but remane youre brother Nelson Hopkins
