Dear Wife I have seated myself
to write a few lines to you for I think it
strange that I have not heard from you since
I left home John Swan received a letter
from Milan but he did not write a word
about you. We are all quite well but
Isiah Hant he has got the dysentery quite
bad he is agoing to the Hospital to night
for we think it is best for him for we cant
help him in camp. But I think he was
poisened for he bought a pie at town & he
ate a part of it & he thought it did not taste
right threw it away & from that time till
now he has been sick all of the rest
are on the gaine that is in flesh we
weigh from 4 to 10 lbs more now than
when we left home & enjoy our selves
well as can be expected James Gilbert
has the Dyspepsia quite bad but
I guess it is for the want of exercise
that is the only thing we can find
fault with we have not our fire arms
yet but exspect them every day
We have drawn a part of our clothing
at Detroit a cap & Blouse & three
days or more ago we drew the rest I pars
pants 2 shirts 1 pair drawers
& a canteen & poncho.
there has been a good deal of fighting
done he within the last week as I
told you in my last we went to
Tuscumbia but did not stay there long
for this reason Prices army was reported
to have been in the vicinity & we did not
stay long in this place did not have
time to go to our Company & have not
since for the reason we have no arms
we fell back to Iuka about 35 miles
& staid there three days & then were
ordered to moove back to Corinth
& it was well we did for Price came
down on our men at Iuka & a
battle ensued in which we traped
old price but he charged on our men
three times & the third cut his way through
with a loss of eight hundred killed &
wounded ours is about half that number
John Combs & Giles Prates from Paw
Paw & most all of the sharps shooters were
out John says he saw one rebel bite the
ground from the effect of his Gun
he said he saw Charles Luce & he was
well but had been sick Charley Knowles
was at their camp & was tought as a buck
& says he can cary as much as the Largest
of them. Jane I saw Capt Waterman
from Burr Oak & Cub Whitney the other
day they say Edmond has not been with
the Regiment for 4 or 5 month he was
sick & sent to the Hospital at St Louis
& they have not heard from him since
but know he is not dead for if he was
the Doctor would have to report to the
Captain Cub & his cousin said they had
heard from Daniels & they were all
well saw a letter from Louisa Whitney
to Cub she wrote that they were all well
We are with the Bagage wagons & act as
guards George Peabody is in camp &
says all of the boys are in good sirits
where they are
Jane I sent 35 dollars to you
by Conway & am anxious about it
but hope it is all right do the best you
can & hope for the best
I will write more next time for I have
to set on the ground. Kiss that Idol of
our souls, Ed is going to write some too
for me
