Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Iuka, Mississippi Historical Figures: Sterling Price Corinth Sept 22nd 1862 Dear Wife I have seated myself to write a few lines to you for I think it strange that I have not heard from you since I left home John Swan received a letter from Milan but he did not write a word about you. We are all quite well but Isiah Hant he has got the dysentery quite bad he is agoing to the Hospital to night for we think it is best for him for we cant help him in camp. But I think he was poisened for he bought a pie at town & he ate a part of it & he thought it did not taste right threw it away & from that time till now he has been sick all of the rest are on the gaine that is in flesh we weigh from 4 to 10 lbs more now than when we left home & enjoy our selves well as can be expected James Gilbert has the Dyspepsia quite bad but I guess it is for the want of exercise that is the only thing we can find fault with we have not our fire arms yet but exspect them every day We have drawn a part of our clothing at Detroit a cap & Blouse & three days or more ago we drew the rest I pars pants 2 shirts 1 pair drawers & a canteen & poncho. there has been a good deal of fighting done he within the last week as I told you in my last we went to Tuscumbia but did not stay there long for this reason Prices army was reported to have been in the vicinity & we did not stay long in this place did not have time to go to our Company & have not since for the reason we have no arms we fell back to Iuka about 35 miles & staid there three days & then were ordered to moove back to Corinth & it was well we did for Price came down on our men at Iuka & a battle ensued in which we traped old price but he charged on our men three times & the third cut his way through with a loss of eight hundred killed & wounded ours is about half that number John Combs & Giles Prates from Paw Paw & most all of the sharps shooters were out John says he saw one rebel bite the ground from the effect of his Gun he said he saw Charles Luce & he was well but had been sick Charley Knowles was at their camp & was tought as a buck & says he can cary as much as the Largest of them. Jane I saw Capt Waterman from Burr Oak & Cub Whitney the other day they say Edmond has not been with the Regiment for 4 or 5 month he was sick & sent to the Hospital at St Louis & they have not heard from him since but know he is not dead for if he was the Doctor would have to report to the Captain Cub & his cousin said they had heard from Daniels & they were all well saw a letter from Louisa Whitney to Cub she wrote that they were all well We are with the Bagage wagons & act as guards George Peabody is in camp & says all of the boys are in good sirits where they are Jane I sent 35 dollars to you by Conway & am anxious about it but hope it is all right do the best you can & hope for the best I will write more next time for I have to set on the ground.
