Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Vicksburg, Mississippi Historical Figures: Camp near Jackson May 25th 63 Good morning Jane for such it is here as far as the weather goes towards making one feel well & good this finds us all well & hope it will find those that make my life worthy of living Oh, how I have thought of little Trudy since you wrote to me she was sick & how it would make me feel to hear that she was no more here on earth But I will stop for it makes me feel bad to think of it when last I wrote to you we were going out on a scout of 10 days but did not stay only 4 had a very good time had a picknick at noon & a dance at night Jane you laugh to see the girls dance down here they cant dance with our ladies at home that you may believe We have got a choir in our company & we have to go with the Colonel & sing for the audien ce Patriotic songs we have a very good selection We have got to go out with him next Friday to Brownsville but dont know as we shal go as I have just applied for a furlough to go down to Grand Junction to see Edmond & Cub & if we go we will have a number one time Ed is going with me Edwin Rice is here now came up on a leave of absence but will return in a day or two he says the boys are all well down there Jane I am going to send you my picture in a locket & you may have yours taken & put in the other side I have mine taken and am going going to send it to Mother for I think she ought to have it dont you We are all enjoying our selves very well today have had some good lemonade wish you was here to help drink some with us but am sorry you cant but be patient & hope for I think there is a good time coming wait a little longer now in return you must send little Trudy likeness Oh how I wish I could be there this summer to stop with you but maybe I will get a furlough & come home this fall for a short time how would you like that there is not much news to write now but the report is that Vicksburg is ours but I dont believe it We will probly stay here this summer but I hope not for I want to go down in front where I can find some of the rebs that have that makes men toil hard for Jane you have not wrote how much money I have sent to you yet write in your next Edwin received a letter from home the other night they were all well but Aunt Kit & Rebecky but I hope when we hear from there next time may bring news that they are well once more Uncle Noble wrote to me two or three days ago that they were all well & that my nursery looks fine & that he could come down here this summer but he could not get anyone to work from him in the nursery Oh Jane I liked to forget Mother says that Hat Arnold has the name of being a bad woman how Peter must feel about it I tell you if it was me it would kill me nearly But I must close by wishing you good for this time excuse all mistakes Yours forever Mitchell H Hogmire Give my best respects to all I will write more next time
