Dear Wife
You will see by the heading of this that
We are once more in the field and in
the land of the enemy But I can say
this leaves us all well but a few
of the new recruits and they have only
the Dysentery and of course they all
will have to go through a course of them
Edwin is out on picket to day and is
well When last I wrote to you we were
about leaving for where we did not know
but we shiped on board of the steamer
and sailed south to Memphis here we
saw Milan and he came on board with
us and is with us now there is an
Order for all of the Bob Tails to report
since I left St. Louis John Bonesteel
received a letter from Carl just as
we left there stating you had nearly
killed yourself by falling no pen can
described the thougs an feeling I have had
ever since I would have applied for a furlough
but Elder Harmon said it would not
avail any thing as they would not give any
more let the case be what they might
I am in hopes that I may get a letter to
day as the mail came in yesterday
and went over the river and Harmon
has gone over after it now and I will
not finish this until after he comes
back I have writen three since I have
received any from you a home We had
a nice time coming down the River all
was quiet it took us seven days and
nights to make the trip We are now
camped on the north side of the Arkan
sas River right opposite of the city
and close to the shore the river is very
rily now and always is at this season
Dear Jane You will know it is night
now & I am seated by my box to fin
ish my letter I have waited for the
mail to come in all day but no mail
as yet and I have to go on picket
tomorrow so I will have to finish this
so it will go out tomorrow
I was over on the other side of the River
yesterday it has been once a nice
place but War has laid waist
to the hansomest of the town it
is as large as Kalamazoo but
not as nice Our commander
at this point is Steel and the most
of the troops think him a rebel at
heart he bords with his sister
in town and her Husband is
Old Prices Chief of Cavalry now
in the Rebel Service what do you
think of that here let me say what
I think of it it is this if we had less
of such Generals in command this
war would the sooner come to an
End and it never will until this
is the case it is reported that our
troops have been defeated above here
how true it is we cant say But I pray
not bad I saw the 10 Illinois that came
in from a scout of 7 days to day and
they had one man killed while out on the
scout the man was killed white on picket
But I dont think it will be our lot to go
on a scout very soon as we have not got
a horse yet and dont know when we
will have Drawn our Carbines and
sabers and have to do Duty Dismounted
and will in my mind until my time
is out Now Jane write often and I will
do the same if you ant well enough have
some of the rest write for you and let
me know all the news of the Army of the
Potomac and just how you hurt you and
All the news in general kiss our hope for me
and tell her Pa sent it to her Give am go
ing to write to them next Mitchell H. Hogmire
Excuse brevity From yours until death
