Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Brownsville Sta Ark January 31st 65 Dear Wife Jane As I have but a few mome nts before taps blows I will improve them by answe ring yours of previous date was glad to hear of your good health and can boast of the same and so can all of the rest of Co “C” And here let me say that at 7 oclock in in the morning we have to leave our barrack to give room for the 9th Iowa Cavl as We are going to leave this Department in a few weeks at the most or as soon as they can get transportation Down the River on to Mem phis and I think there is a sure thing that we will go there without doubt for the first Regt in our Brigade left for there this morning We are to move out to the Old Brownsville for a few days I dont think that we will get pay before we leave here and I dont care much as it would be more riskey sending it from here. Jane Edwin had his face taken to day and has put it up to send home I think it a very good one too I would have had mine taken but the Daufing was lacking as it is a very scarce Artiste here just now Jane when you write again let me know how much money you have paid to Noble and if Dan iel has sold the farm yet or not I wrote to Uncle & Aunt Kit to day I tell you she wrote me a good letter and also received one from Mother & Father they were also received with the greatest of pleasure as they ever are I tell you that none but a soldier knows how to prise friend at home But you will think this a dry letter and so it is but such as it is you are welcome to it There is but very little news he now all is quiet here One of Co B men was out hunting and came across some Rebs and they demanded him to surrender but he couldt see the holy and told them to keep their own distance but charged on him and he was on the prairie but he stood his ground and fired and shot one private and the Capt of the band the rest run Jane it is late and you will have to Excuse me this time and will have more next Excuse all mistakes etc My respects to all Yours Truly Mitchell H.
