Dear Wife Jane
You will have to excuse
me for my long delay in an
swer to yours of Feb the 5th
for I have been sick most of
the time all of the since I last
wrote to you but now I am
some better have been having
the Ague but I dont want you
to worry about me for I will
come out all right in the spring
I hope, as the saying is
We dont get any pay yet and
I dont know when we will as there
aint any pay master sent here
yet I dont know as I will sign
the pay roll this time for
it wont be only 5 months before
I will go home and the risk I
will have to run on sending
it this pay day would pay the
interest on the amount for 5
months And for this reason I
think you had better sell the
gold and silver you have and
buy bed clothing and I will
send you some more for I
will have some coming to me
from the boys Jane we have
turned over our horses and
have calculated to leave this de
partment but cant tell as we
will go yet there has been no
casualties since I last wr
ote to you only one Sergt of Co
D he died of dysentery the
Regt as a general thing is very
healthy now
John Bonesteel was detailed
yesterday to go to the rock to cook
for Capt Martin Acting
Assistant Agt General
So you see John has a good
name as a cook
Jane you said you was go
ing to send me a coppy of the
contract with Jim but I have
not got it yet You said you
went to South Haven I would like
to have been there but as I could
not have to be contented
Say to Mother that Ben was
here yesterday and he said he
was not going to write until we
get pay and then he was going
to send some money to Duane
he is well and so is Arb Ed Milan
Charley & George I tell you George
makes a good soldier much
better than we thought he would
Jane say to Aunt Kit I
guess she has forgotten her
promise for I have not had a letter
Jane I hope Daniel will sell
your place for I tell you I hate
to be in debt so much but I
think I will have six hundred
coming to me from the Co & Gov
if I dont draw pay until I go
home but if you could get your
money then we could pay for our
place & have enough to help ouse
lves with I tell you I mean to try
and live when I get home if I
ever do and I am bound to try
and come it if nothing more than
to try & cut George Cockrans teeth
on some trade
Oh Elder Harmon told me to say
to you that you must eat some aples
for him & while you are about it
you can eat some potatoes
for me I tell you I would like to
get hold of some just now
Excuse all & MHH
Kiss trudy
for me
