Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Brownsville Sta Ark Dec 23rd /64 Dear Mother I received yours of Dec. 9th last night and hasten in reply it found me well and all of the rest of the friends Edwin is writing to Marinda in reply to the one she wrote in yours I also wrote one to her yesterday How I would like to be there Christmas Think I could enjoy a few days of peace as well as any one if I had the chance but I am in hopes it may be my luck to come home next fall but how often one is disapointed in this life for instance yesterday one of Co L men who had been in the Hospital for a long time and getting well as fast as one could started from the hospital to go to his company for the purpose of marking some clothes he had to wash when in the rear of Co F a man was chopping a dry stub for wood and did not see him until the stub started to fall when he cry ed out for him to run but it was to late the limb hit him on the head causing instant death also broke his neck both legs and one arm He was a new recruit and was from Wisconsin his mother was dead but his father is left with a large family of small ones he being the oldest Mother of late when you write what makes you complain so much about our writing I presume it is with you as it is with us and no more so I dislike to see the mail come in without I have a letter But it often does You spoke in yours of my sending Jane some money to buy clothing with I will do so if ever we get paid I have six months pay due me now and have one hundred and thirty doll due me in the Company private debts making in all $238.00 doll due me here I also wrote to Spence to send me some Gold pens and if he does so I will make a right smart on them Now as to the payment due Uncle Noble I have writen be fore I wish to pay him as fast as I can for interest is what takes off the proffits I also wrote to Henry to let some one have the place to work next summer and be sure and have a contract drawn if you let it Jim Gilbert I think would be a good hand to let it too Mother as to our situation it would almost impossible to have it better and be soldiers This afternoon at two oclock we are to have a non com school for the purpose of discussing the different points in Tackticks and regulations We also have meeting twice every Sunday by Elder Harmon have quite a Church Now in conclusion I would say dont forget to write for none likes to receive letters better than a soldier from his Mother or his friends at home It certainly reminds him for who he is now suffering Mother kiss Trudy for me to tell her pa sent it to her Please excuse all mistakes and give my best respects to all From your son Mitchell H.
