Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Frederick Steele Brownsville Sta Ark Dec 18 /64 Dear Wife As I have just come from mee ting & have a few moments to spare will improve them by answer ing yours of Dec. 2nd which was received to night and you may be assured it was peruse d with the greatest of pleasure & it found me enjoying life as well as one can and be a soldier all of the rest are well Edwin is on Guard to night he Recd a letter from Mother and Marinda I must say we are having meetings twice every Sunday and prayer meeting Wedesday Eavening but time passes off rather slow I tell you But my time will roll around soon and then I think I may stay at home and try to enjoy life if such can be my luck Jane you say that most all are Drafter but there is one thing sure that as long as I have my sences my name shall never be enrolled for a Draft This is my objection how much more better it would be for all if they would enlist and not stand a Draft But I am glad that some of them are caught Sam Bigelow and Area baker how they will squirm I would like to ask Baker what time it is by his gold watch etc Jane you seem to be anxious about my letting you know about paying the rema inder of that we owe Noble as soon as you let me know how much you can pay him down if he takes the notes then I can tell how fast I can pay him You ask if Jim Bridges has paid me he has not and let Noble have the note but mind the interest on all you let him have Jane has Jim Gilbert paid for the piece of land he lives on let me know in your next You ask if I am pleased with the place you have brought I am and I think I can pay for it by the time I get out of the service But as you said in your last I think it would be best to have Daniel sell the place now as land is high priced and the money would never come more accet tiable than now for of course it would answer as though it was worth it full value Jane this is a poor composed letter for there is so much noise I can hardly think at all and there is but very little news any way here now Steele left us yesterday the band played for him when he left here Cooper The Tenn has got back had a furlough to go home to see his mother went to Nashville and saw James Southard and quite a lot of men that live at Lawrence Oh there was a man shot at DeValls Bluff yesterday for dissertion he belonged to the 22nd Ohio Infantry you will have to excuse all mistakes Tell Marinda that I am going to answer her letter my best Respects to all and a share to yourself Tell Trudy to be a good girl and mind her ma and Grand Pa Mother I will answer yours in a few days M.
