Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp near Jackson Apr 30 Dearest Jane Please pardon me for not answering your kind letter before & in future I will be more punctual this leaves me all right except a headache & that is not much to ail one in war times I received your likeness & was much pleased but was sorry that you couldnt have had Trudys taken too they all think that you look as young as ever Jane I will have mine taken & send it to you when I have a good chance the artist at town is a very poor one & his price very high I sent home by Mrs Hudson twenty four Dollars & should have sent home more but did not get my pay last pay day for the reason that we have never been mustered into the United States Survice & dont know but what we may have to go back to Michigan if we sho uld you can look for me to stop over night with you but you dont want to look for me for fear I may not come for private know not what the order is until the command is given Some say they cant hold us in the survice unless we have a mind to muster but I came down here to do my cou ntry all the good I can & am bound to try & do so today the Regt have mustered for pay there is six months pay due me now & if I get it pay day I can send 75 doll to I wrote to you a day or two before I received your last let me know if you got it there is not much news now in camp Joe VanDyck sent Ruth 30 doll with mine & Ed sent 12 to Father they sent us a box of things that comes very good,you may believe as we receive them just after being out on a scout & had not much to eat in camp those socks you sent me came very good as I needed a pair very much at the time & Jane it made me think of one that nothing but this war could cause me to be away from & hope that the time may soon come when we will be permitted to be together as we have heretofore write to me all about how you get along with those debts etc. etc. Jane what is the reason that Daniel dont write to me but I will say if he dont want too he need not I heard from the 12 the other day they all wel that we know Jane all the clothes that I have drawn since I have been in the service is eighteen doll so you see I have been as saving as the most of the boys who have drawn $40 or 50 I have the best horse in the company so say all the boys Jane I wish you could come down here & be with us for a few days to see how camp life goes & see the country it is nice now indeed since the trees have put out their leaves Oh I like to forget a Lieut by the name of Bingham & a Corporal by the name of Graves were taken captive by the Rebs comeing in from Lexington & the opinion is they were murdered nothing deffinite is known of them now write often & I will too Give my best respects to little Dan tell him I wish him much joy tell Grandmother Himbauch to accept my best respects Daniel & Mary too & all of the rest Earnest & Serena both must write Kiss little Trudy & Jude how I would like to kiss her too Yours forever M H Hogmire
