Regiment: 4th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Co 4th Mich Columbia Tenn April 17 We left Nashville the 14th and was 2 days and a half coming to this place. We staid in the woods by the side of the rode. We traveled over some of the roughest country that you ever see. Hills as big as you ever saw and trees some of them were round and run up to a peak. Yesterday morning we forded the river. It was up to the horses side and about 10 rods wide. We are here in Camp and the prospect is that we will stay here sometime and if we do you will hear from me often. I was out of stamps but I got a letter from Mary today and got 8 stamps and 2 sheets of paper and three envelopes. We are well and hope this will find you all well. I got a letter from you the first day that we marched. It was rote the 5 of April and mailed at reading. You said that you was agoing to move but did not say where. I am tried and cannot think of anything to write. I have been to town this forenoon after forage for the horses. It is nice weather now. The apple trees are in full bloom. The citizens say that they are 4 weeks later than common this spring. They are just planting corn and cotton. There is lots of cotton down here and they are just carting it to market. The boys all feel well now. There is about 1200 in regiment. Good by this from your well wishing husband. Nelson Higgins
