Regiment: 5th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Sunday afternoon Feb 16th Dear Dollie I am feeling verry lonesome to day I shall begin to think I am getting homesick for I am not contented in any place that we have been in lately. how I would like to be with my dear dear wife again to talk too + live over again some of the pleasant and happy times that I have spent with you wonder if you will have any kisses left for me when I get back have you ever thought of the time when I learned you how to kiss of how we used to quarrel and then again how we would fix it all up again I have thought of all this many many times when going my lonely rounds on guard of dark and rainy nights and of how I should have enjoyed myself this winter had I have staid at home with Dollie and Paul. I shall feel verry uneasy about him until I hear from you again what would I do were he to die while I am so far away our regiment have gone out on picket to day but I was excused from going to day as I was on guard last night and have a verry hard head and tooth ache but shall go out tomorrow hope we shall be luckier than where we was out before as we had one man shot. while the second Mich was out they lost two men and the NY 37 reg had 3 killed and a no wounded You tell me you are sure I will get tired reading your letters. what a queer idea you must have all the trouble I have about them is that they do not come oftener and I think entirely to that short nowdont you know that all most anything from Michigan and you would interest me Yesterday and last night was real wintry weather we had between four and five inches of snow. it is pleasant again to day and the snow is fast di- -appearing you say you wish I would go home in the spring now don’t you think everything is favoring an early settlement of our difficulties with the rebel states I certainly think that our regiment will go home within the next three months. You say again that you wish I would send another picture of myself and accouter- -ments I can get it taken but it will cast a dollar without a case and 25 cts postage. would you not rather have the money. our band is now playing the funeral Dirge over the remains of another member of regiment five have died from one Co they are buried side by side on a high beautiful spot with a board at there heads giving there names + Co + regiment it does not seem to be verry unhealthy here but a good many have died mostly with the measles. the man that was so sick in our Co. is getting better and will probably get will. I will try and get back so that I can help you take care of our little children. what are you going to name the little girl I presume you will think I have wrote you a little foolish letter but you will not laugh at me will you dear ever time Jim
